Last May till July Annelie Lekkerkerker stayed in Nepal for an internship for Agriterra. The aim of the internship was to develop the lobby and advocacy procedure at NACCFL (Nepal Agricultural Co-operation Central Federation Ltd.). NACCFL is the umbrella organisation of Small Farmer Agriculture Cooperative Limited (SFACL) and similar other agriculture cooperatives. She wrote a blog about her experiences.

Farewell José Levelink

Last Friday, José Levelink, manager operations at Agriterra said farewell. Cees van Rij, manager agri-advice, and Kees Blokland, managing director, gave speeches in which they thanked José for her incredible commitment to Agriterra.

Studytour for Chinese delegation

Over the past half year, business advisor Aijun Yang in China worked on building up a relationship with the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA), an influential Chinese NGO, focusing on poverty alleviation, raising funds from national and international companies and organisations. To date, CFPA has raised total funds and materials worth USD 5.7 billion, and delivered aid and assistance in 33 million individual cases. After a period of trial by error, they are now looking for a sustainable way to contribute to China’s Rural Vitalization strategy. The foundation wants to help 1,000 cooperatives with a total investment of € 640 million euro in the coming years, and is interested in Agriterra as a partner in cooperative capacity building.

Agriterra reaches almost 700,000 farmers, organised in in more than 250 cooperatives. We interviewed 7 farmers from Nepal (2), Peru, Uganda, Philippines, China and Ethiopia to find out if their situation has been changed. How was their situation several years ago (or before their membership), what has happened during their membership, what were the most significant changes in their situation and how did the changes come about?

Investment in the farmers of the future is key

Agriterra has always highlighted the importance of active participation of young members in farmer organisations and cooperatives. In our ‘Farmers Fighting Poverty’ program for 2016-2020, youth is one of the focus points. We stated that by the end of 2020 at least 50% of our cooperative clients will have active Youth Councils or alike sections in place and that at least 10% of the board members of cooperatives will be 35 years or younger.
