PHILIPPINES - To strengthen their position in cooperatives in rural areas and their value chain, Agriterra and East-West Seed Philippines organized a Female Leadership Training (FLT), for agricultural cooperatives, to increase the women’s knowledge and improve skills on leadership, gender and diversity. This is the 7th batch of FLT conducted this year.

Read moreThe FPA (Farmers’ Potato Academy) in Rwanda is a school of potato farmers, initiated from farmers’ wishes and owned by farmers through Imbaraga Farmers’ Organisation. The Academy is envisioned to become a decentralised learning academy in which multiple value chain actors collaborate to increase the knowledge of potato growing in the sector. Farmers are playing a key role in the academy, through their farmer organisations and cooperatives, while also government agencies, NGOs and private sector participate. Through professionalising existing extension systems, the academy is contributing to the realisation of the potato sector development objectives in Rwanda.

Across the world, farmers are working together to improve their economic, social and market position. Many of them have formed cooperatives to provide agricultural services for members. The basic functions of these cooperatives include input supply, storage, processing, bulking, and selling members’ produce. Other functions may involve providing credit, training and education.

Facilitating a training is always a great challenge and at the same time a real passion for me. The recent training in Benin will definitively remain in my memory. Not only because of the atmosphere, the very peaceful city of Grand Popo, but also because of the results achieved. I am thinking especially about my youngest participant who was very happy to receive his certificate of participation (a baby of 6 months). I will also remember the training because it was our first training in Benin since we left this country in 2015.
